Anime & the Unexpected
Those who design characters are special brand of genius. They give me some great “what if” moments. Mostly Naruto character here.
“PBS Kids Summoning Jutsu”
“Jees’ dude, you have a lot of summoning jutsu.” You’re not wrong. If you can summon a giant toad, and you can summon a dog, maybe you can summon Clifford the Big Red Dog. I always loved Pakkun’s grumpy face - thought it would be a good contrast with Clifford’s happy look. Clifford was inspired by PBS Kids promotional art, and Kakashi and Pakkun are from stills from Naruto.
“A League of Extraordinary Friends”
This picture came about as a vehicle to combine several characters I just like for one reason or another. It may be obvious to some but from left; Super Grover, Sailor Moon, The Tick, Samurai Jack, Spider-Ham, and Bobby the Barbarian. I enjoy thinking about what this group would have in common with other superhero groups. Who’s the leader, the muscle, the distance fighter, the skilled one, or the wild card? Obviously, Grover is feeling menacing.
“Gentle Step Twin Pony Friends”
Hinata Hyuga (from Naruto) and Fluttershy (from My Little Pony) have similar personalities, (reserved and shy). I bet they would be friends.
“The Doc is in … the Leaf Village”
I made this for my older daughter who is 12. She is into Naruto, but it wasn’t so long ago (at least in my mind) she was into Doc McStuffins. I guess this is me trying pull those stages together. Evil Lambie is a little bonkers. This was inspired by fan art and promotional art.
“A Call to Other Regions”
Here is Hinata Hyuga again; this time with my younger daughter’s favorite Pokemon. I was going to add pokéballs, but my girl insists this would be a summoning jutsu. For the uninitiated this is from left Mightyena, Alolan Muk, Hisuian Zorua, and Eevee on Hinata’s shoulder. The models were online art.
“Companions Somewhere”
This is intended to show the progression between sword and sorcery and anime fantasy. Conan inspires Drizzt Do'Urden / Dungeons & Dragons, Guts (from Berserk) is both fantasy and anime, and Gaara (from Naruto), is the final step. I’m not in love with the composition, but I do think Conan looks ok. They all look like they are posing for their 80s album cover.
