The Broader World
I do take a lot inspiration from pop culture, but sometimes I’m moved to try other things (with various levels of success). I like whales and owls and cats and heaven knows what else.
“4 Monks”
I am so good at drawing hands! Anyway, I started this picture just by making round bald heads. The monks are called from right to left, Meditation, Contemplation, Epiphany, and Purpose. So pretentious. I like pen and ink and all the scratching a shading, but I don’t do it often.
“A Sparkle at Bee’s Branch”
This is Sparkle (the elf not the cow). A dear friend asked for a somewhat specific picture, which normally terrifies me. But here is Sparkle the elf on Christmas Eve waiting for pick up, with my friend’s sweet-little cabin in the background.
“All Owls”
This owl is ink and the oil paint function in Photoshop. I like that he is simple and sweet looking.
“Handsome Boy”
This guy lives in a small pot outside our back door. My wife put him in a bigger pot so he’d stop smashing her plant. He moved back soon after, but I did get a picture to base this little painting on. It’s on a 3x9 canvas.
“Three Magic Worlds”
This guy was inspired by a coloring page and painted on a 5.75 x 5.75 piece of craft wood. I wanted to see the grain when it was done to look rustic.
“Owl See You Through”
I found this composition online and painted it up as a a gift for my wife (apparently there is a whole trope of cats set adrift). I made this to learn and practice. She had a ginger cat she was fond of and I often think of owls as protectors. This is on craft wood.
“Remember It’s Real”
I made this for someone special. I like chotskies, the cheesier the better, but I try to remember they are almost always based on something glorious, whether it’s a plastic Eiffel Tower or a ceramic whale planter.
“What Will The Others Think”
This is also a blending marker and and paint pin with the Oil Paint function in Photoshop.
“Tranquil Testudine”
My wife loves turtles. I made her this guy as a gift. See if you can spot the DD on the shell. I like his placid expression.
“The Kali Collie”
My buddy is a Kali martial artist, so I made him a Kali Collie for his birthday. This really should go in the fantasy section.
“Gold Sapientia”
I could never get this intense looking guy to look quite right. I added some deep black around his eyes and then I felt he was done. I wonder about the very open space behind him. Sapientia means wisdom BTW.
“Owl Eyes on You”
I do so many goofy mashups that need to look a little like specific characters, sometimes I forget I can just let the brush go and be expressive. This painting needs another name.
“Just Be Here”
These little love owls are based on a Valentine’s Day card my wife gave me. The card itself is tucked into the back of the canvas. I’m trying to avoid owl puns … Owl Try … Owl … Owl always love you … darnit.
“A Prickly Friend”
My daughter loves hedge hogs. I made this for her for Christmas one year. Her initials are hidden in the quills.
“Noctua”
Well, here is another owl. This friend was done with markers and paint pens for highlights. I took him into Photoshop to use the “Oil Painting” function. I dig their liquid look.
