Dungeons & Dragons & Friends

Fantasy has a broad context. Sometimes it’s intense, sometimes whimsical, sometimes childish. Smashing those concepts together makes me giggle.

“A Gift From Bast”

T’Challa, the Black Panther and King of Wakanda, made friends with a Dungeons & Dragons displacer beast. I know, “but displacer beasts are evil” … this one isn’t. He’s sweet. It has a He-Man on Battle Cat kinda look. The DB is inspired by a D&D source book and some pictures of big cats.

“Summon the Horde”

For those who know, these a few fantasy barbarians. Wulfgar from the Legend of Drizzt books, Bobby the Barbarian, from the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon in the ‘80s – he has a cameo in the “Dungeons & Dragons movie” – and of course Conan. It’s interesting for nerds like me to note Bobby and Wulfgar have dwelled in the same world (though they are unlikely to meet). You can find a couple of these guys elsewhere on the site as well.

“Distant Cousins”

I’m not big on gore but sometimes the picture demands it (or I just want to do it). This is, of course, a Dungeons & Dragons style Troll, Magic Trolls, and Smurfs. As Poppy and Smurfette bring the pain, and the smurf in the foreground says, “we’re smurfed man, we’re smurfed.” The big troll is inspired by a D&D source book and the other characters come from toys and movie/show stills. My wife says the big troll looks like Gargamel (an accident).

“American Harpy”

I went for a eagle and it got away from me. He’s more menace than Americana.

“Odele Says Goodbye”

This one depicts the Greek myth of Odele, as she says goodbye to her fisherman father and before Poseidon places her in the stars. As a father, I hope I always remember my daughters, as poor Odele’s father could not.

“Only the Pure of Heart

This unicorn is shamelessly based on the unicorn in the original Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual. I know Daredevil shows up a lot. Not sorry.

“Guuuuys, The Ranger is getting mad”

This one was inspired by some cute chibi-style stickers I found on Etsy. Tried to make it playful. Drizzt and Cap. are fed up with the shenanigans.

“Wings of Fate”

My younger daughter is very into the Wings of Fire book series right now. She now has an encyclopedic knowledge of “genus dragon”. It strikes me how much the LiefWings and SkyWings look like Green and Red Dungeons & Dragons type dragons respectively. This is an Christmas gift for her.

“Guarding the Bridge”

I wasn’t sure where to put this one. This was a X-Mas gift for my sweet little brother who enjoys video games. This is Geralt the Witcher and Yoshi ready for action on a snowy night. My brother took this photo after he hung the picture.
